Rules and Safety tips for bicycles
  • PA TITLE 75 states: A person under 12 years of age shall not operate a pedalcycle or ride as a passenger on a pedalcycle unless the person is wearing a pedalcycle helmet meeting the standards of the American National Standards Institute, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Snell Memorial Foundation's Standards for Protective Headgear for Use in Bicycling, or any other nationally recognized standard for pedalcycle helmet approval. This includes an attached restraining seat or trailer.
  • Bicycles may be ridden on the shoulder of a roadway traveling in the same direction as the flow of traffic but are not required to ride on the shoulder.
  • Bicycles are to be driven in the right lane of a roadway traveling with the flow of traffic. No more than two abreast.
  • Motor vehicles must allow four (4) feet of distance when overtaking a bicycle and travel at a careful and prudent speed. It is the motorist’s responsibility to provide this distance.
  • Bicycles are to obey the laws of the roadway which means stopping for traffic signals and stop signs. Bicycles are to be driven with the flow of traffic and bicyclists should be predictable.
  • At night bicycles are required to be equipped with a front light and a rear reflector. It is strongly recommended a bicycle should be equipped day and night with a front white light and a rear red light with the bicyclist wearing bright reflective clothing.
