Love the Library

The library will hold its annual fund-raising event titled "Love the Library" on Saturday, April 28 at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Pittsburgh documentarian Rick Sebak will be a featured speaker. Please contact the Reference Department at 412-828-9520 ext. 215 for details.

Library Programs for Adults

Wise Walk Library Walking Group: Walk for fitness and earn a free t-shirt and other prizes. Walk on your own or with a library group. Begins in early May. Contact the reference department to sign up.

Senior Healthcare Conversations: Come for coffee and informative sessions on topics of interest to seniors related to health issues. Please contact the reference department for the dates and topic of each session.

Women's Networking Group: Learning and Networking at the Library This series for women will be held monthly at the library on the fourth Thursday of each month and each session will have a speaker talking about a topic of interest to women. Each event begins at 6:30 pm.

Gardening Classes The library offers several free vegetable gardening classes throughout the spring. Please contact the reference department for details.

Talking Tech: How Kids Use Technology to Communicate: A Collaboration between the Cooper-Siegel Community Library and the Fox Chapel Area School District Discover which tools kids are using right now to talk to each other, from cell phones and texting to computer chats (but not email) and learn the tips and tricks of these tools that they use all the time. This seminar is part of a collaboration between the Fox Chapel Area School District and the Cooper-Siegel Community Library to educate adults about how students are using technology. Bring your own device to follow along or use one of the library's computers. May 16 at 6:30 pm: Topic: Preventing Cyberbullying

"Green" Events at the Library: Presented by the Pennsylvania Resources Council, these programs encourage wise usage of our environmental resources. You must register in advance for all programs. The schedule of events is: April 5 at 7 pm: Healthy Body Healthy Home and April 19 at 7 pm: Worm Composting.

Genealogy Series: The library will offer a two-part series on genealogy and the history of U.S. immigration. April 9 and 16 at 7 pm.

Preparing for U.S. Immigration, Visas and Green Cards: A series to prepare those who want to become U.S. citizens and/or obtain visas and green cards. Various dates in April, check with the reference department for details.

UPMC Physician Lecture Series:

  • Wednesday: April 4 at 6 pm: "Managing Carpal and Cubital Tunnel Syndromes" with Franklin H. Chou, MD.
  • Wednesday, April 25 at 6 pm: "Lessons in Loss and Living". Presented by Michele Reiss, PhD, director, Behavioral Science Education, UPMC St. Margaret, the program will explore inspiring stories and lessons on the importance of living and loving well during the process of coping with serious illness and grief. Michele Reiss is the author of the book "Lessons in Loss and Living."

"Memoir of a Milk Carton Kid": the Tanya Nicole Kach local kidnapping story is re-told by the author of this book, Lawrence Fisher, and by Tanya. Please contact the reference department for the date and time of the event.

"Planning to Help Your Senior Parents" on April 12 at 7 pm Mary Beth St. Clair will talk about living options for seniors with varying needs, and elder law attorney Julian Gray will address several issues including asset protection and benefits available to veterans.

Library Programs for Children

  • Story times for toddlers (ages 24 to 36 months) are held on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:30 am.
  • Story times for preschoolers (ages 3 to 5 years) are held on Tuesdays at 10:30 am or Wednesdays at 1:30 pm.
  • Baby lap-sit story times (ages infants to 24 months) are held on Fridays at 10:30 am.

National Library Week - April 8-14: the library will have story times, crafts, coloring pages throughout the week and a special demonstration of Playaways on April 10.

Knitty kitties: Learn how to knit! Lessons start on April 14 at 10:30 am.

Movie matinee: see the newest blockbuster at the library on April 7 at 1 pm.

Lego Days: Build to your heart's content on April 21 and May 21 at 1 pm. American Girl Celebration: April 28 at 1 pm: bring your favorite doll and enjoy games, trivia, crafts and refreshments.

Summer Reading starts on June 2: Sign up for the summer reading program with this year's theme "Dream Big, Read!"

Library Programs for Teens

Make it for Mom: May 5 at 1 pm: Make a handmade gift for Mother's Day. Local jewelry designer Judith Stone will help you create something beautiful. Also available to make are bath salts and other gifts.
